NITF for ArcGIS

NITF for ArcGIS, an extension to ESRI® ArcGIS Desktop, provides a proven, certified solution for using data in the National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF), a raster data format common in the defense and intelligence communities today.

This extension improves the efficiency and timeliness of your geospatial analysis workflows by allowing you to read NITF data within the ArcGIS environment and create data products with ArcGIS Desktop that comply with the latest NITF specifications. The extension provides full NITF read and write support, and has been recommended for certification by the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC).

Developed to complement ESRI's interoperable, standards driven platform, the NITF for ArcGIS extension allows you to:

  • Easily read and display NITF imagery and annotation segments

  • Access NITF metadata in an intuitive metadata viewing window

  • Save existing files to the NITF format within ArcGIS Desktop

  • Export ArcMap Data and Layout View contents to the NITF format

  • Easily compress files using the JPEG 2000 standard

  • Control NITF read and write preferences for ArcGIS workflow

What is the NITF Data Format?

The National Imagery Transmission Format (NITF) is a standard widely used by geospatial analysts in the defense and intelligence communities. The NITF format allows for storage and dissemination of imagery and its associated metadata - or the detailed information about the location, context, content, and structure of the image - in a single file. NITF is crucial to the interoperability of systems within and among defense and intelligence organizations.

Exelis Visual Information Solutions developed the NITF for ArcGIS extension for concurrent release with ArcGIS 9.3.
