Commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has become increasingly popular in many fields due to its flexibility in providing crucial data for both day and night and in virtually all weather conditions.

Advantages of COSMO-SkyMed data

Because of advanced capabilities of the SAR sensors aboard COSMO-SkyMed, it is possible to generate very high resolution products ( < 1 meter, to 3 meters) that are a significant improvement over commercial SAR products used in the past. And, an area of interest can now be observed several times a day in all-weather conditions, making it easier than ever to detect change, track movements, and more.

COSMO-SkyMed is a constellation of four Earth observation satellites, three of which are already orbiting and providing SAR data. The satellite constellation configuration allows a very frequent coverage (only a few hours compared with up to 24 with other satellites), which will enable monitoring of changes on the Earth’s surface using a very high temporal resolution. The data also provides a very good temporal correlation when working in interferometric mode for DEM generation.

Using ENVI and SARscape with COSMO-SkyMed Data

Now, ENVI provides a solution to processing and analyzing your COSMO SkyMed data.  The SARscapeFamily of Modules are add-on solutions to ENVI that allow you to ingest, read, process, and disseminate information from this unique data type.

With SARscape you can analyze your COSMO-SkyMed data in almost real time, providing high quality and highly updated information that can be used for military applications (change detection, monitoring), disaster management (floodings, natural events), geology (land displacement), civil engineering,oil & gas, GIS integration and cartography.

Once the user has set the main parameters, SARscape performs the geocodification of COSMO-SkyMed data automatically without the need of ground control points, and outputs a high precision (pixel level) geocoded product.

And, using ENVI and SARscape with COSMO-SkyMed data lets you create very high resolution DEM (Digital Elevation Models) and displacement maps, with a minimum of user interaction.
